Edward Ernest Bennett
Goalkeeper (1953-1956)
After winning eleven England Amateur caps and guarding Great Britain’s goal in the 1952 Olympics (where he conceded three in six minutes as Britain exited to Luxembourg), on turning professional he immediately became Watford’s first-choice goalkeeper when Dave Underwood was transferred to Liverpool. From his début Ted Bennett missed only one game in a sequence of 82 League & cup fixtures (he was ever-present in 1954/55) before suffering a broken finger. He toured the West Indies with an FA representative side in 1955, and later ran a greengrocery business in Kilburn.
