At centre-half the club briefly had the benefit of Paul Miller’s know-how borne of more than two hundred top-flight appearances and three major cup triumphs in consecutive seasons. Under the captaincy of future Watford manager Steve Perryman he was a member of the Tottenham Hotspur sides which won the FA Cup in both 1981/82 and 1982/83, and the UEFA Cup in 1983/84, when he scored in the final. Miller retired in 1991 owing to injury and embarked on a career in the financial world.
