Nigel James Gibbs

Full-back (1983-2002)

Player

Role models don’t come any better in professional football than this long-serving one-club man. A knee injury shortly after his appointment as club captain in 1992 put him out of the game for over two years, and then he got badly hurt again, but recovered to continue one of the great Watford careers. Nigel Gibbs made his senior début in a UEFA Cup tie two days after becoming a professional, and he came to monopolize the right-back position, making more Football League appearances for the club than anyone else but Luther Blissett and Duncan Welbourne, and in all first-team competitions more than anyone except Blissett. But for the injuries he would very probably have gone on to set appearance records far in advance of everyone else. Although rarely among the goals, he once scored in both legs of a Football League Cup tie against Darlington.
