Edmund David Underwood
Goalkeeper (1952-1963)
A genial, ebullient and popular figure who had three spells as a brave goalkeeper at Vicarage Road, the first of which ended with the club’s first £5,000 sale. Dave Underwood became the proprietor of a haulage business, and as chairman of Barnet he earned the gratitude of Jimmy Greaves for his help in the latter’s fight to overcome his alcohol problem. Also during his Barnet chairmanship Underwood’s son, Dave junior, both played for the club and, in 1978, died.
