David George Bewley
Full-back (1953-1956)
Although considered for international honours as a schoolboy – he was selected for an England Schools trial match, but missed it through injury – he was 26 before playing in peacetime League football. Ever-present in his first two seasons at Vicarage Road, he was a cool, cultured full-back. Dave Bewley captained Oxhey Cricket Club, and after leaving full-time football was employed by Kodak at Hemel Hempstead for 26 years. In retirement in the West Country he eventually achieved the status of Watford’s oldest living player until his death at the age of 92.
